PITLOCHRY: A History

Published by Watermill Books of Aberfeldy in 2008, this hardback 272-page book with over 260 black & white photographs is a comprehensively updated and expanded local history.

The author is Colin Liddell, a third generation lawyer in the firm of J. & H. Mitchell, W.S., of Pitlochry and Aberfeldy. It was the second ever partner of the firm, Hugh Mitchell, who wrote the previous histories of the District in 1911 and 1923.

Colin himself wrote Pitlochry: History of a Highland District in 1993, published then by Perth & Kinross Libraries, which after the issue of a second edition has been out of print for several years.

Colin continued his researching and writing since 1993 and the fruits of his labours can now be discovered in Pitlochry: A History which gives a fascinating insight into the history of Pitlochry, unofficial capital of Highland Perthshire, from the Ice Ages to early 2008.

The book is wide in its range and depth, giving a primer in Scottish history and a geology lesson, as well as the more ‘normal’ fare of a local history. As well as Pitlochry itself, the history is set against the backdrop of the whole district from Tummel Bridge to Logierait and Struan to Enochdhu and the histories of villages within this area are also covered.

Pitlochry: A History succeeds in bringing to life detailed historical research with anecdotes and asides. In Colin’s words, “The book repeats some of the best known and most documented legends and stories of the district, without attempting to conclude that they are correct in every respect. In short, it tries to let the atmosphere of bygone days shine through.”
